This pin is an excellent Christmas gift for any deacon. It depicts St. Stephen as he gazes up to heaven asking the Lord to receive his spirit as he was being stoned. Stones lay scattered on the ground around him.

St. Stephen is commemorated on the 26th day of December. St. Stephen was one of the first deacons and the first known Christian martyrs. He was a deacon in the early Christian Church. The apostles needed helpers to look after the care of the widows and the poor. So they ordained seven deacons, and Stephen was the most famous.

St. Stephen infuriated the members of the Sanhedrin when he told them that the Temple would be destroyed because Jesus gave a new law that went beyond the law of Moses. He was thrown out of the city and stoned to death without any trial.

But [Stephen], filled with the holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and he said, Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God....They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him....As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit....Lord, do not hold this sin against them (Acts 7:55-56)
